General InformationThe Chatham Islands are located 800km east of Christchurch. The Chatham Islands is a 2½ hour flight and is 45 minutes ahead of mainland New Zealand. The weather is very changeable and visitors need to be prepared for rain and sun as well as cool winds. Windproof jackets and raincoats are recommended and gumboots are ideal if you have them.

Awarakau Lodge is situated on a working farm with stunning sea views. The lodge has a guest lounge with tea and coffee making facilities. Accommodation is a combination of twin/double rooms with ensuites or twin/double rooms with shared facilities. Guest rooms in the main lodge all have private ensuites, amenities and hairdryers. The two bedroom cottage has a shared bathroom and kitchenette. A combined ANZ Bank/Post Office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00am to 2:00pm. There is no ATM machine on the island. The climate is temperate with summer temperatures of 15-24 degrees.
There is no cellphone coverage on the Chathams. There is a public card phone in the main township. The lodge has a landline available for guest use and calls to mainland NZ are charged at $2 per call.

Flight
Air Chathams is the only airline that flys to the Chatham Islands. From Auckland the flight is direct and takes approximately 2 ½ hours. The aircraft is a Convair, offering plenty of legroom and personal space.
All meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) are provided and there is 24 hour complimentary tea/coffee available in the guest lounge at the lodge. With the lack of shops and cafes, you may like to bring a few snacks for in between meals.
There is a Medical Centre and small Pharmacy. Emergencies will be airlifted to mainland NZ. Be sure to bring ample supplies of your own medicines.
Optional fishing trips and an excursion to Pitt Island are available. The lodge will confirm these arrangements. It is advisable to book the Pitt Island day tour with Twilight Travel prior to departure from mainland NZ. Optional activities to be paid with cash at the lodge.

There is no public transport. Rental vehicles are available for hire. Your tour package includes all transport for the excursions. |
