Discover Dunedin and Central Otago’s history and heritage from the start of the official settlement with the arrival of the first Scottish settlers in 1848, the Otago gold rush of the 1860’s which brought thousands of miners along with bankers and businessmen, through to the building and development of the city into the early 1900’s. Highlights will be visiting Larnach Castle and Garden, the fully restored Fletcher House and the preserved Olveston House. Dunedin and Otago has some fabulous examples of Victorian and Edwardian buildings, and gothic styled churches and cathedrals. In Central Otago we will explore some of the old gold rush settlements of Lawrence, Gabriels Gully and Arrowtown and finish in Queenstown with a cruise on the TSS Earnslaw that serviced the high country stations around Lake Wakatipu.
We start our tour in Dunedin, the main town of the Otago area, with a wealth of history. The first settlers from Europe arrived in Port Chalmers in 1848. We visit several historic sites, including Larnach Castle, Fletcher House, St Paul's Catherdral, and Olveston House. We travel through Lawrence, Gabriels Gully, Cromwell, Arrowtown, and finish the tour in Queenstown.
Highlights of the tour include high tea at Larnach Castle, the fully restored Edwardian villa Fletcher House, Glenfalloch gardens, a lake cruise on the TSS Earnslaw, and a special private dinner evening at the lavishly decorated Olveston House.
