Wild South: The Catlins and Stewart Island Tour

Day One   Hometown to Dunedin           
Dinner

From your home town in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch mid morning, you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Dunedin. On arrival in Dunedin you are transferred to the hotel for our two night stay.

Day Two   Dunedin Sightseeing        
Cooked Breakfast / Dinner

After a leisurely start this morning, we take a city sights tour of Dunedin, the capital of Otago. We drive to Signal Hill for uninterrupted views of Dunedin, stop at Baldwin Street—the steepest street in the world and enjoy a walk through the Botanical Gardens.

This afternoon we drive to the tip of the Otago Peninsula  - Taiaroa Heads, where the world’s only mainland colony of Royal Albatross is found.

View the interpretive displays and fascinating introductory “Attenborough” video before joining a guided tour to the Richdale Observatory where the colony and nesting sites can be viewed.

Late afternoon we visit Penguin Place, a private Yellow-Eyed Penguin conservation reserve. Where a series of trenches and observation points throughout the reserve can have you within just a few feet of these endangered birds.


Day Three   Dunedin –  Kaka Pt, Catlins         
Cooked Breakfast / Picnic Lunch / Dinner

This morning we journey along the Southern Scenic route to Kaka Pt. in the Catlins.
A number of stops will be made on route to view natural wonders, waterfalls, scenery and wildlife. Numerous walking tracks lead to awe-inspiring treasures of the Catlins. We will walk some of the shorter tracks that are of 10-45 minutes return.

Day Four   Catlins Sightseeing

Today we continue our exploration of the Catlins region.
Day Five  Catlins to Stewart Island

This morning we leave the Catlins region and travel to Curio Bay as we make our way to Invercargill where we board light airplanes for the 20 minute flight across the Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island.

Day Six   Stewart Island Sightseeing           
Continental Breakfast / Picnic Lunch / Dinner

Today we join "Rakiura Charters" for a leisurely cruise of Paterson Inlet. Late morning we disembark at Ulva Island for a guided walk of this truly amazing island abundant with birdlife. Ulva Island is one of the few open island sanctuaries accessible to the public. On the return to Oban watch for seabirds. Many kinds of Albatross, Shearwaters and other pelagic birds are usually seen.
 
Day Seven   Stewart Island Sightseeing       
Continental Breakfast / Dinner

This morning we join a bus tour and gain an insight into Stewart Island's community, history and environment. Highlights include Rakiura National Park entrance at Lee Bay, Halfmoon and Horseshoe Bays and views of Paterson Inlet from Observation Rock. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore the local area at leisure. There are many short walks in and around Halfmoon Bay, and the DOC visitor centre and Museum both offer interesting displays.

Day Eight  Stewart Island to Invercargill                      
Continental Breakfast / Dinner

This morning visit the Bunkhouse Theatre to view the short film - "A Locals Tail" before joining the short flight this afternoon to Invercargill.  The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the city.

Day Nine   Invercargill to Hometown

This morning enjoy a leisurely buffet breakfast before we farewell new friends and transfer to Invercargill airport for the return flight home.

 

General Information
  • Twilight Travel reserves the right to alter the itinerary due to operational and logistical requirements.
  • Walks, particularly in the Catlins region are subject to tidal and/or weather conditions. Alternatives will be substituted where possible if necessary. 
  • The walks vary in distance, but are generally between 15 and 60 minutes return, on well formed tracks & even surfaces. Some tracks may be uneven with steps and slopes.
  • For your safety and enjoyment your should be in good physical condition to partake in tour unassisted. This tour is not suitable for wheelchairs and walking frames.
  • Accommodation: With the remote areas visited, accommodation standards will vary and not be consistent from one property to the next. Some properties have varying room types and cannot supply similar rooms to the complete tour party. Therefore you may find you are allocated a two bedroom unit at one place and a studio unit at another. All rooms/units have private bathroom facilities and tea/coffee making facilities.
