Tuesday 28 February Hometown to Dunedin D
From your home town fly to Dunedin. On arrival in Dunedin you are transferred to the hotel for your two night stay. Cargills Hotel or similar, Dunedin 2 nights Wednesday 29 February Dunedin Sightseeing B/D This morning we take a city sights tour of Dunedin, the capital of Otago. We drive to Signal Hill for uninterrupted views of the Dunedin, stop at Baldwin Street - the steepest in street in the world and enjoy a walk through the Botanical Gardens. This afternoon we drive to the tip of the Otago Peninsula - Taiaroa Heads, where the world’s only main land colony of Royal Albatross is found. View the interpretive displays and introductory “Attenborough” video before joining a guided tour to the Richdale Observatory where the colony and nesting sites can be viewed. Late afternoon we visit Penguin Place a private Yellow-Eyed Penguin conservation reserve. A series of trenches and observation points throughout the reserve can have you within just a few feet of these endangered birds. Thursday 01 March Dunedin – Kaka Pt, Catlins B/L/D Today we journey along the Southern Scenic route to the Catlins. A number of stops will be made on route to view natural wonders, waterfalls, scenery and wildlife. Many walking tracks lead to awe-inspiring treasures of the Catlins. We will walk the shorter tracks that are of 10-45 minutes return. Nugget View Motels, Kaka Pt 2 nights Friday 02 March Catlins Sightseeing B/L/D Today we continue our exploration of the Catlins region. Saturday 03 March Catlins to Stewart Island B/L/D This morning we leave the Catlins region and travel to Curio Bay as we make our way to Invercargill where we board light airplanes for the 20 minute flight across the Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island. Bay Motel, Halfmoon Bay 3 nights Sunday 04 March Stewart Island Sightseeing B/L/D Today we join "Wildfire" for a chartered cruise. Shortly after leaving Halfmoon Bay we disembark at Ulva Island for a guided walk of this truly amazing island abundant with birdlife. Ulva Island is one of the few open island sanctuaries accessible to the public. Late morning it’s back onto "Wildfire" for a leisurely cruise around Patersons Inlet and picnic lunch onboard. On the return home the seabirds are fed and many kinds of Albatross, Shearwaters and other pelagic birds are usually seen. Monday 05 March Stewart Island Sightseeing B/D This morning we join a bus tour and gain an insight into the community, history and environment of Stewart Island. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore the local area at leisure. There are many short walks in and around Halfmoon Bay, and the Underwater Explorer cruise is a great opportunity to view the marine life from a semi submersible craft (optional). Tuesday 06 March Stewart Island to Invercargill B/D This morning we have a leisurely start before we farewell Stewart Island and join the short flight to Invercargill. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the city. The Kelvin Hotel, Invercargill 1 night Wednesday 07 March Invercargill to Hometown B Farewell to new friends and Southland as we transfer to Invercargill airport for the return flight home.
